You’ll join one of our passionate expert big cat keepers for an unrivalled tour of South Lakes Safari Zoo’s big cat species.

You’ll learn lots of new things about the world’s most endangered yet spectacular animals then get a truly memorable opportunity as you go behind the scenes in the big cat houses and hand feed 2 of them.

Plan for the day

  • Meet your big cat ranger 5 minutes prior to your allotted time.
  • Following a welcome and Safety briefing your ranger will take you on a guided tour of South Lakes Safari Zoo big cat species.
  • After a visit to the “big cat kitchen” to chop your “nibbles” you’ll get to hand feed some of the big cats of South Lakes.
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Packages includes admission, you are welcome to spend the whole day in the park.  Please check the web for opening times.

How it works

  • Buy your voucher now and call us Monday to Friday on 01229 466086 x0 to book your date.  This experience will be popular so phone as early as possible and ALWAYS prior to booking accommodation.
  • Suitable for 7 years and up.   15 year olds and under must be accompanied by an adult who will be required to purchase the experience.
  • Voucher is valid for 12 months from date of purchase.  No extensions will be possible due to the popularity.

Join our Animal Carers and become a Junior Zoo Keeper for the day

7-15 year olds experience one of the most exciting careers in the world as you roll up your sleeves, wack on your wellies and spend the morning shadowing one of our highly trained and friendly animal carers.

Your day will start bright and early at 7.55am and finish approximately 12.30pm.

What will you do?

Minimum donation £65.00 per child.  Morning drink with snack,  is included in the price as well as a junior keeper T-shirt to keep as a memento of your day.

The keeper for the day scheme is run and organised by the Wildlife Protection Foundation – an International charity based here at the park working all around the world to save habitats an species in the wild. All money raised is donated to conservation in the wild. Another active conservation project from the park that doesn’t just talk about conservation…it does it!

Cost

You will accompany one of our keepers for a behind the scenes tour of the park getting up close and personal to our monkeys, giraffes,penguins.. and more….  Prepare to get mucky as you help muck out (Hold your nose we’re going in!) and prepare dinner for some of  animals and get ready to ask lots of questions as you spend the morning with one of our animal experts.

 

For the parents

Children are supervised at ALL TIMES by one of our highly trained animal carers.   This is a group experience with a maximum of 5 places per day. A parent/ guardian must sign a disclaimer at the beginning of the day and they must leave and emergency contact number before they go.

Please NOTE due to the nature of the experience all special needs and  medical issues must be declared at time of booking.  Regrettably certain guests will be unable to take part including people with relevant phobias or known allergies and immunocompromised individuals.

Whilst every effort is made to accommodate those with a disability or learning difficulty, due to practicality and health and safety this cannot always be achieved; please contact the park for advice before purchasing.

In the event of a child misbehaving or creating difficulties or health and safety issues within the group the keeper in charge on the day has the right to withdraw that child.  Parents/Adults will be contacted and the experience halted with no refunds given.

All family members can visit the Park on the day however they must pay our admission prices to enter – our normal opening time is10:00am. The Junior Keeper experience finish at 12:30noon and your information documents will let you know where you need to pick up your Junior Keepers.

To be eligible for this you must be between the ages of7 & 15 years old.

Experience one of the most exciting careers in the world as you roll up your sleeves, whack on your wellies and spend the day shadowing one of our highly trained animal carers.During your day as a keeper you will be assigned to one section and will spend your day helping with food preparation, feeding, cleaning out and anything else that might happen!

It’s a one to one experience of a lifetime!

What animals will I work with

As keeper for  the day the choice is yours – choose the animal you would most like to work with and we will  assign you to the relevant section:  “Bear “ in mind you will work with a selection of animals throughout your day not just your chosen one!

Animals to choose from include:  Rhinos, Giraffes, Baboons , Porcupines,   Andean Bears, Tapirs, Otters, Hippos & Babirusa, all the primates, Bats and Tortoise  as well as  the big cats, 8 Lemur Species, Tamarins, Marmosets, our large collection of Kangaroos &  Wallabies,  Vultures, Condors, Penguins, Macaws, Spoonbills, Waterfowl, Storks and Ibis.

What hours will I work?

The day will start at 7.55 when following a safety briefing you will be met by your “keeper for the day” and will finish (animals permitting!) at 17.30. (17.00 in winter)

 “Keepering” is a mucky job so be warned you will be expected to “muck in”, so wear suitable clothing and footwear.  Safety Wellington Boots are available for loan however we must have your request and shoe size in advance!

Family Animal Encounters

Do you love monkeys? what’s your mums favourite animal? need a gift for someone who is obsessed with giraffes?  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to join our keepers on a behind the scenes personal encounter with an animal or group of animals of your choice you’ll never forget.

How long will the experience last and what will happen?

Your family animal experience should last around 20 minutes. Every animal and every day working with animals is different but you will get a fantastic  up close personal introduction from our highly trained keepers.

This fantastic experience includes entry to South Lakes Safari Zoo, lunch plus an animal encounter for the whole family*.

Where do I meet my keeper?

Your tickets will tell you where and at what time to meet your keeper.

What time can I come into the park?

The park opens at 10am and you are welcome to come in any time after that.  Your experience starts at the time stated above, please be prompt to meet your keeper otherwise you may miss your experience. 

What about lunch?

Lunch is included for the family present the enclosed meal voucher at the till together with your drink choices whenever you are ready to eat. Adults  can choose from Cheeseburger and chips, peas or beans or Jacket Potatoe with 2 toppings; Children choose from Chicken nuggets or Hot dogs with chips beans or peas.) Hot drinks for adults, fruit shoots  or cartons of milkshake for children.

Cost

A 2 persons experience costs £85, for a family of 4 it is £105.
