Otters have tight packed under-fur with long guard hairs; the coat repels water and soon dries. Otters have webbed paws. They chirp and bark to keep in touch and can also growl. Otters move across country but like to be near water where they find food. This otter lives all across the indo-Chinese region and is becoming increasingly rare in some areas. It is a very social animal, often being seen in family groups in the wild.

We have a  breeding pair here, the female is an unusual colour, a very light fawn/grey, and she is called Cinnamon. The male who is the normal colour was born in Amsterdam Zoo, The Netherlands. in 1999 and arrived here on 29th March 2000. This pair of otters bred for the first time in September 2000. They have had 2 young in July 2001, four more in December 2001 and 3 in December 2002. The species is under threat in its natural habitat of South East Asia.
