Hey guys, another week at a visitor-less Safari Zoo!  We have been closed now for nearly three months and we cannot thank every single person enough for their donations of food, funds, support and presence throughout this crazy time.  We hope everyone has been tuning into our live streams via facebook. Everyday Kim, Michael and Karen stream live from the zoo giving you different animals, stories and a virtual visit to the zoo while we are closed. www.facebook.co.uk/SafariZooUK

This week we are helping to promote the 30 Day Wild campaign lead by The Wildlife Trust. A month long campaign which see’s one random act of wildness from anyone that wants to get involved, per day. You can get involved with your chance to win a free child admission ticket by submitting your 30 acts at the end of the month!  We have many staff members involved from home too, building bug hotels, spider web catchers, bird feeders and more really cool act of wildness to get into the ‘wildlife and nature’ spirit.

Safari Zoo’s, Michael says he walks at least 25,000 steps in just one normal working day here at the zoo… 👣 that’s a lot of walking isn’t it?  Whether you wake up and waddle your way through the housework (because we all know that can add up the steps) , take the dog for a walk or head to your local park for a stroll (social distancing of course), you can take part in today’s random act of wildness. Why not make a note of all the things you see on the way (maybe not a good idea when your doing the washing) but how many different trees, how many other people are walking too, or just enjoy the fresh, peaceful air.

Day 1 (Monday 1st) we saw One of our newest members of the animal care team, Jack head off from the zoo at 9am, barefoot ‘in the shoes of the animals’  as he embarked on a 15 mile trail to help raise funds for the care of the animals at the zoo.   It really is a time for team work and Jack did exceptionally well to finish in good time.   Jack has raised over £800 which will be an immense amount of support for the zoo and the animals – just pawesome Jack.  You can still donate to Jacks fundraiser here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/barefoot-trail

You can help in many ways too – from sponsoring a meal, e-dopting your favourite animal, buying a ticket to use later in the year or purchasing an animal encounter with a whopping 50% discount. You can even donate Leafy greens for Stan the Sloth and breakfast for the Red Pandas we also have some amazing Raffle prizes including this stunning portrait of Jaguar Bonita!

We’ve had 2 very special days this past week – World Parrot and World Otter Day which are celebrated on 31st and 27th May, raising awareness of the plight of Otters and Parrots around the world.  Safari Zoo is home to 2 Giant Otters – Carlos and Tupi and a number of Species of Parrot including the vivid Scarlet Macaws.  As few as 1500 Scarlet Macaws may remain in the wilds of Central America and between 2,000 and 5,000 Giant Otters remain in the wild.

Thank you for E-dopting us...... 7

Sometimes, when you get caught up in the daily tasks of the job, you forget the amazing environment we are lucky enough to be surrounded by working here at Safari Zoo.  I was lucky enough to take a walk through the World Wide Safari on Thursday, making my way between Africa and the Office building.  I was taking this photo of a group of sleeping lemurs, thinking how perfect it was for our social media when I heard a rustling in the trees above my head, looked up to be met by this inquisitive Lemur Baby!  Hands down, the best walk I’ve taken in the World Wide Safari in the 3 years I’ve worked here!  Adorable.

We’ve also been hard at work getting ready for reopening (whenever that may be) with some super-dooper signage, aswell as expanding our online shop to include pawesome homegrown brands like Emily Smith Designs.  We are currently offering a 10% discount on all Emily Smith purchases, visit our online shop here
